Civil War Anniversary

The Society newsletter follows the developments that tore the nation apart 150 years ago with month by month events of the Civil War. Early 1861 had formation of a new nation, calls to arms, and the fatal firing upon Fort Sumter that began open warfare.

Through the year the chronology follows the first major battle, the death  of Lincoln's chief adversary for the presidency, Senator Douglas, and the beginning of the president's frustrations in choosing an effective commander of the Army of the Potomac. Transcontinental telegraph replaced the failed Pony Express, construction of a transcontinental railroad began in California, and the keel of the USS Monitor was laid.

Right here at the LaSalle County Museum, you can see Civil War artifacts, the carriage that Lincoln rode to the first Lincoln Douglas debate, and much more…. Make your plans to come in and see us and them.

A book on LaSalle County History or one of our beautiful throws make a nice gift.  More Info
